Audra Mcdonald is a standout in her breadth of talent and versatility as a singer and actor. Record-breaking six times recipient at her Tony Awards, two Grammy Awards, and one Emmy Award she received in the year 2015 by Barack Obama. With a soprano of unmatched elegance and an aptitude for dramatizing truth, her roles in Broadway or in the opera stage are just as easy as those in films and TV. Her career has been successful in concert and recording performing regularly in some of the most prestigious places around the world. McDonald grew in Fresno California, where she was surrounded by a large family full of musicians. At the Juilliard School in New York City, McDonald received training as an classical vocalist. She was awarded her debut Tony Award in 1994 for the Best Performance of a Featured actress in a musical for Carousel in the Lincoln Center Theater. In the subsequent four years she was awarded two Tony Awards under the featured actress category. The awards were given for her Broadway performances of Terrence McGally's play Master Class and Ragtime. She won the fourth Tony for the role that she portrayed alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun. When she was in 2012, she was the lead actress on stage in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess she earned the fifth Tony and won the first prize in the lead actor category. In 2014, the Tony Awards most-decorated performer in 2014 was Billie Holiday, who she played on stage in Lady Day At Emerson's Bar & Grill. This is the same role she played for her 2017 West End London debut for which she was nominated for an Olivier Award. First actor recognized in all four acting categories, McDonald broke the record for the number of awards an actor has been awarded. The credits for McDonald's theatre work comprise The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (99) Henry IV (2007) 110 in the Shade (2008) Twelfth (2009) Twelfth (2009), the Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut, Shuffle Along or the Making of the Musical sensation in 1921 and All That Followed (2017) Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune (2018) and Ohio State Murders 2023. McDonald made her TV debut in the award-winning Peabody Award winning CBS show Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters' First Hundred Years. In the following years, she starred alongside Kathy Bates, Victor Garber and other actors in the highly acclaimed Disney/ABC remake of Annie in 1999, McDonald appeared as a recurring character on the network's Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald's first Emmy came for the HBO film version of the Pulitzer Prize winner Wit. Directed by Mike Nichols with Emma Thompson as the main character and McDonald was back on network television in 2003. She starred in Mister Sterling and produced by Emmy Award winner Lawrence O'Donnell Jr. She became a character on The Bedford Diaries of the WB show The Bedford Diaries in early 2006. In the following season, she played in a role that was recurring on NBC's TV show Kidnapped. McDonald received a fourth Emmy for her portrayal of Lady Day in Emerson's Bar & Grill on HBO in the year 2016. The Bite is a drama with six episodes based on the pandemic that was co-produced with Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. She appeared with Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. McDonald initially played U.S. lawyer Liz Lawrence (now Liz Reddick), in CBS's legal drama The Good Wife, in 2009. In the year 2018, she returned to the role on The Good Fight for Paramount+ as a regular in the series. She received three Critics Choice Award Nominations. The actress is currently guest on Julian Fellowes' period drama The Gilded Age.
