Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father left her family. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she would not be a good choice for this school. Ford decided to apply for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in a 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared in TV shows such including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre brought her into the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. However, Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy and added stand-up comedy to her resume in the year 1996.
